I’ve been slightly obsessed with Barbra Streisand ever since I saw the movie Funny Girl when I was six. The 74-year-old singer, songwriter, actor, director, and producer just released a lovely new album, Streisand Encore, featuring an all-star cast who joins her in performing some great Broadway tunes.
While some of the songs are a bit obscure, the stars who join her are not. Hugh Jackman, Melissa McCartney, Alec Baldwin, and Anne Hathaway are just a few of the big names Barbra and I have been sharing the stage with since I bought the CD last week.
The Repertoire~ At The Ballet/Anne Hathaway and Daisy Ridley, Loving You/Patrick Wilson, Who Can I Turn To/Anthony Newley, The Best Thing That Ever Has Happened/Alec Baldwin, Any Moment Now/Hugh Jackman, Anything You Can Do/Melissa McCarthy, Pure Imagination/Seth MacFarlane, Take Me To The World/Antonio Banderas, I’ll Be Seeing You/Chris Pine, and Climb Ev’ry Mountain/Jamie Foxx.
Every song includes intriguing dialogue, and some reworked lyrics, so each selection feels like a complete theatrical number. Pure Imagination (from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) with Seth McFarlane may bring a tear to your eye.
It’s a shame you can’t hear me sing Climb Ev’ry Mountain with Babs and Jamie Foxx. You’ll have to take my word for it, but we sound real smooth. Like buttah!
