Lovely Thing ~ Easy Christmas Cookie Recipe

Last year, I was lucky enough to digitally connect with fellow Gilmore Girl fan and author of Eat Like A Gilmore, Kristi Carlson. Her recipes, inspired by the food mentioned in the popular series, are as fun to make as they are to enjoy!

Her cookbook quickly gained popularity with the revival of Gilmore Girls on Neflix’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and even soared to the #1 spot on Amazon!

Lucky for me, Kristi’s enthusiasm for Gilmore Girls inspired cuisine did not end with the publication of her first book ~ last spring, she reached out to like-minded fans, like me, to help create more recipes!

In Season 1, Episode 8, it is mentioned that Sookie makes a delectable dessert called a Maple Sugar Snowflake. Here is my take on a Maple Sugar Snowflake cookie recipe:

This recipe can be followed two ways ~ as a simple drop-style maple sugar cookie or, for some festive flare, add a cookie cutter and my delicious maple glaze. Enjoy! ~N

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt
3/4 cup of butter at room temperature
1 cup of granulated sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 egg
1 tablespoon of orange juice
1/4 cup of pure maple sugar
1/4 cup of sugar (to roll dough balls in)

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Cream butter and sugar together.
3. Add egg.
4. Add orange juice, maple sugar, and vanilla.
5. In a separate bowl, mix together dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt).
6. Slowly add dry ingredients, a bit at a time, to the wet mixture, mix until well incorporated.
*7. If baking cut-out cookies, refrigerate dough for 2-4 hours. Then, cut out snowflake or cut-out cookie shapes and place on parchment paper on baking sheet.
*8. If baking drop-cookies, roll about 1 in. dough balls into granulated sugar, then place on baking sheet.
9. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes.
10. Transfer warm cookies to cooling rack to cool before drizzling with maple glaze (recipe below).
*Cookies will puff up a little, but once baked, will flatten back down while on cooling rack.
Recipe makes about 3 dozen cookies.

Ingredients for maple glaze:
1/4 c melted butter
3/4 c pure maple syrup
1/4 tsp vanilla
1 c sifted confectionary sugar

Directions:
1. Melt butter.
2. Add maple syrup and vanilla
3. Sift confectionery sugar and whisk into butter/syrup/vanilla mixture.
4. Drizzle glaze onto cooled cookies.
“Baking cookies is comforting, and cookies are the sweetest little bit of comfort food. They are very bite-sized and personal.” ~Sandra Lee
